    Daddio Dow @ The Hexagons

Daddio Dow has been making electronic music since 1973. He calls himself a music mechanic, assembling various sound bits into eclectic electronica. He draws from influences from before Bach and after Eno. Sometimes ambient, sometimes noizy, you’ve not heard this before.

We are pleased to host him for the last event of 2024 on the roof of The Hexagons.

    Saturday 28 December 2024

    Starting at 1pm

  • Singing Poet Society @ Hexagons: what happened?

Singing Poet Society @ Hexagons: what happened?

One of the most controversial things about generative AI in the artistic field is undoubtedly the fact that the gigantic databases on which the generation is based are built with data available on the web, without asking for any authorization from the authors. Some sites have specialized in audio generation, but they do not care about the origin of the generated content and instead focus on the creation of web interfaces designed to facilitate the creation of “songs” that sound “believable”.

This also applies to graphics or wherever AI works generatively, so much so that the prompts can be tacked on with the wording “in the style of [famous name here]”, sometimes resulting in somewhat “artistic” results. But who is the artist in this case? Who wrote the prompt or who actually created the snippet that the AI based the piece on?

In my opinion there is no real creative act in this, it is more a question of luck than anything else.

The Singing Poet Society project case instead adds an element that changes the cards on the table. Tony has trained the AI (a process called machine learning) using his own material, aspects that in my opinion constitute the heart of the matter. The AI is used here simply as a tool for the construction of a song, it is not ultimately that different from using sequencers or other generative tools in a DAW.

However, knowing that the one singing is the AI with Tony’s voice is a bit shocking, but that’s what actually happens.

I haven’t come to a personal opinion yet and I don’t know what I think, but removing the use of materials made by others from the scene certainly cleans up the perspective.

Anyway, here is the recording of the evening, so everyone can develop their own conviction.

  • The Hexagons: New Location and updates

The Hexagons: New Location and updates

For various reasons Hexagons changed address, and is now in Pelican Village (http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Pelican%20Reef/65/209/1746).
It’s been overlooked lately, but one of the great things about Second Life is that time is truly relative.

Taking advantage of the new location and the renewed attention, we would like to organize a small festival, refreshing the walls a bit and inviting all composers of SL’s own music to continue to send a photo and a note about themselves to Livio Korobase and/or Renee Rebane, so they can be added to the directory.

Many are already on the walls, but there is still room.

    See you soon.

bio of artist at The Hexagons

Bsukmet begins his musical journey at the age of 6, attending piano and musical language classes at an academy with exams through the Toledo Conservatory. Since he was little, he has traveled to various locations giving piano concerts with a classical repertoire.

In 2006 he joined the Madrid gothic pop rock band Evil Thoughts, taking on the role of keyboardist and lead songwriter. Together with them he writes 2 albums, the second of which is composed entirely by him.

In 2010 he entered the virtual world of Second Life, where he began his career as a DJ, focusing on artistic events, such as the SL anniversary party, and other projects with diffusion in the real world such as the Nice Carnival.

In 2019 he abandons his role as a DJ to start showing his own creations in Second Life. Since then he has released 4 solo albums: “Zero”, “Third Demise”, “Shattered, Almost Detached” and “Imniali: Forced Perspective” and the “Silent Beauties” album, in collaboration with the violinist Fly Kugin.

Bsukmet mainly uses electronic and orchestral resources, but his style is eclectic, and his method consists in using exclusively free resources available to everyone and avoiding the use of sounds created by other composers, writing each piece note by note.

Tia Rungray at The Hexagons, the full performance in Second Life

Tia uses this combined real video/virtual video formula that works a lot, is informative and interesting. Yesterday’s concert on the roof of the Hexagons was excellent, good music, good people, friends. Perfect.

Like those times you feel like you’re in the right place at the right time.

There isn’t much more to say. Listen to good music, it’s good for mind and body.
Hope to see Tia-san on the roof of Hexagons again. Always welcome.

The location of the event, The Hexagons, is hosted in Museum Island and is open to anyone who wants a place where and can play in a context other than the classic “club” or “opening” one, The stress of competition does not exist here, and we are not interested in having crowds but on good music. Peace, love and coffee.

  • The Hexagons, second life music composers directory

The Hexagons, second life music composers directory

Music is present in any SL event, and there are many categories of musicians: DJs, cover bands, singers, instrumentalists, and anyone who uses music as a form of entertainment.

Among all these types of musicians, there is one in particular that fascinates me: who compose and play their own music.
In general these are really passionate people, who over time have built their own personal studio by spending time and money in this passion and they also use SL to play their own music.
I think it’s easy to see the difference between this type of musician and all the others: what you hear is a performance built on one’s sensitivity and skill, and the result is presented in public. A very delicate relationship.

The Hexagons is a place dedicated to those who produce and play their own music, a catalogue of musicians who produce or have produced their own music in Second Life.
In the installation there are frames with the images of these musicians: a click on the frame will give you a folder containing the image and a text with all the information about the selected artist.

The Hexagons also has a stage on the roof where occasionally events can be organised.

Why all those stairs? Well any composer does scales all day, major, minor, pentatonic, blues. mixolydian, eolian, so on and so forth.

Do I like Escher? Yes, I like his work but in this case the stairs are practicable and you can also walk them upside down.

The current artists are certainly not all those present in SL, for now they are only those I know personally. So if you are a musician who produces your own music and plays it in SL, send me a photo of you and a notecard with your information, I will be happy to add a new frame to the directory.
